On Dec. 17, 1869, Catharine H. ? Acton was born in York twp. she was the daughter of Alfred Acton, a farmer, b. England, and M. Catharine Acton, b. Ireland. Washtenaw birth records, vol. 1, page 120.

Aiston Albert M.D.

Albert A. Aiston, M.D. was a medical doctor in the Azalia area.  His bio appears in the 1913 History of Monroe Couty page 729-730.  He was born Nov.14, 1847 in Genessee county, NY, son of Robert Aiston and Malvina Leete Aiston.  Albert’s father was a farmer, who died when Albert was a child.  After the father’s death, Albert and his brother Charles came to Milan Township with their mother, Malvina.  Albert enlisted in the Civil War in January 1864.  He lived on a farm and placed himself under the preceptorship of Dr. Jackson, a Monroe County physician. Later he studied under Dr. Mason.  He was then qualified for a medical license. He practiced medicine in Milan township and the surrounding area for 25 years. He has a farm of 76 acres near Azalia, south of Milan. He lives in a 9-room rural home.  Albert married Mrs. Eliza (Bisbee) Bulson I 1868. She was the widow of Edward Bulson, a Union soldier who died in Andersonville Prison. Eliza had a son, Edward Bulson, Jr.  Albert and Eliza had 3 more children: Ernest, a dentist, deceased; Robert, also a dentist; and Catherine (Mrs. E. R. Turner).  Dr. Aiston has been secretary of the board of health for seven years. He belongs to William Bell Post, Grand Army of the Republic at Dundee. He belongs to the Masons and the Odd Fellows.  Source: 1913 Monroe History page 729.

Burle Aiston lived in a house on E. Main (where post office is now located).  He lived there just before the post office was built.  His wife’s maiden name was Bernice Hess. Postoffice.

Allen Carlos

Carlos Allen died at his home May 21, 1898. He was born April 4, 1836, the son of Harmon and Clarissa Allen. He was born in a log house standing on what was then the Bethuel Hack farm, now (1898) owned by Henry Hack. This house stood in a field now occupied by an apple orchard just west of Mr. Hack’s horse barn.  Carlos Allen assisted his father on the farm during his youth and young manhood. That farm is now occupied (1898) by R. C. Allen.  For his education, Carlos attended the local district school and a few months at the Ypsilanti school.  He attended school at the old “red” school house at Fryburg and in the village at the schoolhouse standing where now stands the large brick residence of C. M. Blackmer. He taught in the district schools for a time.  In April, 1860, he married Marla Winslow and started farming near Raisinville.  He had two sons, Harmon W. and Charles J., and daughter Clarissa L.   In 1863 he moved to his farm in Milan township. He enlisted in the 18th Mich Infantry in 1864 and served until the close of the war. He was an ardent Republican. He did not attend church but believed generally in the principals of Christianity.  Source: Milan Leader obituary.

Charles J. Allen, 25 of Armstrong, Iowa, born in Milan, and occupation farmer, was married Dec.23, 1888 in Milan. Bride was Lena R. Redman, 21, of Milan, born in Milan, working as a dressmaker. Wedding in Milan by Jay Huntington, minister. Witness: Adda L. Redman and Clara L. Allen of Milan. His parents: Carlos Allen and Maria Winslow. Charlotte Allen was the sister of L.C. Allen and Harmon Allen.  Charlotte died sometime before 1881.

Clarissa F. Allen, wife of Harmon Allen, is buried in Spaulding Cemetery. She was born Feb. 3, 1810 and died Oct. 22, 1841.

Clayton

Clayton L. Allen was born Sept. 17, 1878.  He died of an illness on Sept. 2, 1898, when he was almost 20 years old, after fighting in the Spanish American War in Santiago, Cuba.  He was the eldest child of Roscoe C. and Lucy Allen.  Records created from Charles Wilson indicate that Clayton died at St. Johns Hospital, NY while en rout home from the war in Cuba.  Buried in Marble Park.  Metal sign on his grave indicates he was a veteran, and served in Cuba.

Harmon Allen was buried in Spaulding Cemetery.  He was born in Hinesburg, VT on Feb. 12, 1819 and died Oct. 3, 1889.  (NOTE: Possible mistake, maybe he was born in 1810)

On Oct. 7, 1853, Harmon Allen sold a piece of land, 1/4 acre, to School District No. 1 in Milan township and York township.  Price: $50.  On the county line between Monroe and Washtenaw Counties, partly in each county, and lying east of a lot sold by George and Hannah Wilcox to James S. Gay. The parcel is 4 rods wide on the Monroe and Saline plank road, and 10 rods back. Liber 71 p. 682.

Allen Harmon

Harmon Allen served as the Representative to the Michigan State Legislature from Monroe County in 1857-58.  He served as Milan Township supervisor in 1849, 1850, 1853, 1859 and 1867.  He served as Monroe County Surveyor in 1844, 50, 52, 56, and 60.

Harmon Allen was born in Vermont in 1810.  By occupation he was a farmer and a civil engineer. In politics, a Democrat until the Dred Scott decision, and since, a Republican. Mrs. Harmon Allen died Friday, Sept. 6, (or Sept. 4) 1889 at age 72 years, 4 months.  Funeral at ME Church, Rev. M. H. Bartram. Burial in Spaulding Cemetery. Her parents, John and Minerva Thompson, are also buried at Spaulding.  Before she married Harmon Allen, her name was Mary S. Thompson and she was the widow of Amos P. Henry S. Allen, 26, of Trenton, Mich, married Augusta Maria Schneider, 21, on Sept. 12, 1854 in Monroe.

Hiram

Hiram Allen was born in Chittenden county, near Burlington, VT, Feb. 12, 1810.  From History of Monroe County.  Hiram remained in Vermont until 1832, when he settled on a farm in Milan Township, one mile from Milan village.  He engaged in farming and surveying.  He married Clarissa Andres of Vermont in 1835.  He had three sons:  Carlos, born April 4, 1836, Horace H., born Oct. 21, 1837, and Jerome, born Dec. 11, 1839.  Then his wife Clarissa died in 1841.  He married a second wife, Laura Shilling, on March 29, 1842.  He had two sons with her:  Eugene E., born Feb. 6, 1845, and Elvin C., born April 3, 1849.  Hiram’s wife Laura died Dec. 30, 1852.  He married a third wife October 9, 1853, Mary S. Taylor.   “He has been supervisor of the township for many years and in 1856 represented the county in the State legislature.”  He was able to purchase land very cheaply, along with John Marvin and Bethuel Hack, under Pres. Andrew Jackson’s land grant program.

In 1885, Horace Allen was appointed Justice of the Peace in Milan township.

Horace N. Allen was working as a Monroe County justice of the peace in 1880 and signed a document in April 1880.  The deed he signed had to do with the “Old Shack” in Milan.  Harmon Allen was lending money in a mortgage to Dewitt C. Stever and Joanna his wife.

Horace Allen died of heart failure Sept. 20, 1901 at his home in Milan township, age 63 years, 10 months, 29 days. He as a farmer, he had large farming interests. He married “34 years ago” to Lydia Lewis of Milan township. They had two children; Eugenia survives. The other was Harriet, a gifted daughter, who lived to young womanhood, dying in Kansas where she had gone in a vain quest for health. Rev. Danskin officiated at funeral outside his home.  (Obituary described a funeral march to cemetery but did not specify where he was buried.)   (If he was born June 21, 1837, I think he was 63/10/29 at date of death.)

Allen Jerome

Jerome Allen was born in Milan in 1839. . His parents [Hiram and Clarissa Andrews Allen] were from Vermont.  When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted, in Aug. 1861.  He was wounded, and then discharged in August 1864.  (See History of Milan County, p. 35 for more detail.)  He returned to Milan, attended school one year, then taught school.  He worked with his father in surveyor business.  In 1869, he married Delia S. Allen.  Her parents were from New York state, and had come to Michigan in 1860.  Jerome and Delia had 5 children; Cora Belle, Ella Mabel, Maud Eliza, and Blanche Fay.  A baby, born Nov. 26, 1874, lived only 10 months.  Jerome Allen serves as commissioner of highways of Milan (Milan Township?).  His farm has 126 acres.  He is a member of the G. Lovatus

Lovatus Chapman Allen died Sept. 5, 1901, at his residence in York twp, 1 mile west of this village [Milan Mich.]. He died of a fatal illness.  He was 84 year, 22 mos, and 15 days.  He was born Sept. 21, 1816 in Chittenden county, VT. His father, Edward Allen was a Revolutionary War vet, closely related to Ethan Allen of Ticonderoga fame.  Lovatus has two bruothers who survive him, out of 5. His 3 sisters already died.  He came here 50 years ago with his wife and children.  His wife had already died, and a baby son; he was survived by 1 son and 7 daughters. L. C. Allen is listed in the 1874 Atlas of Washtenaw County in the business directory, where he purchased a spot to advertise his work as a cheese maker.  The directory states he lives in York Township, Sec. 34.  He arrived there in 1850.  He was born in Vermont.

Lovatus Allen, Jr., was born June 24, 1853. He died Aug. 8, 1854. Moved from Mooreville cemetery and reburied at Marble Park cemetery Apr. 15, 1902.  Mooreville cem. records.

Bio childhood

Hon. L. C. Allen, [Lovatus Chapman Allen] was b. Sept. 21, 1816, in Huntington, Chittenden Co., Vermont.  He was the 4th of 6 brothers:  Harmon, Abel, Carlos, Lovatus Chapman (the present subject), Cyrus and Harry. Three sisters were also raised to woomanhood-Charlotte, Maria and Laura. The 3 sisters and Cyrus have gone, the rest remain.  L.C.’s father, Edward Allen, was b. Conn., the son of Elihu Allen.  Elihu was a cousin of the celebrated Ethan Allen, of Ticonderoga fame. The Allens moved from Conn. to VT before the Revolutionary war.  L.C.’s father was 17 when he enlisted, and the government provided him a pension near the end of his life. [The father] was the surveyor for quite an extensive neighborhood during its early settlement. L. C.'s mother was Abigail Palmer Allen, b. Conn. Mr. Allen attended a log school on his father's farm before he was three years old. His mother sent the older boys to school and L.C. would run away and go too.  He made fair progress in learning, and was out of her way, so she let him go. He remembers going to school before he wore trousers.  When LC was 6, his family moved to Richmond.  He went to school summers till about 9 or 10 years old, and then about three months a year during the winter.  He engaged in wrestling at school.  At age of 18 he went to an academy about four weeks, and then (entered) a large school where the students were bigger and older than him.  He taught there 3 months. He worked at home during the next summer, and in the fall took another term of five weeks in an academy.  The next winter he taught at another school, with better success.   As a representative man of the higher class of Michigan citizens, we give Mr. Allen's portrait in this volume, on page 529.  Source:  History of Washtenaw county, 1881, p. 422.

His father gave him his time at 20, and L.C. Allen went to Massachusetts to learn some kind of manufacturing. He worked at $10 per month, in the shop of one Luke Harrington, a manufacturer of guns and cast steel hoes. Luke offered to increase L.C.’s wages 50 per cent. for another year, but tjhere was a national financial crash in 1837.  L.C. returned to his father’s farm to work summers and teach school in the winter. When he reached age 25, he went to Deckertown, NJ, where his brother Carlos was starting a medical practice. L.C. taught school there 5 years. Marriage

LC and Sarah Dewey were married in the spring of 1845.  She was b. Dec. 22, 1821, a daughter of Wm. F. and Catherine (Compton) Dewey, natives of NJ.  The newly weds went to Branchville, Sussex Co., NJ where L.C. worked in a woolen factory for 3 years.  Then they moved to a farm in Michigan.  L.C. and Sarah raised 7 daughters and 1 son:  (1) Kate, wife of Franklin Butler, was born in Sussex Co., N. J., Feb. 20, 1848; (2) Mary E., wife of J. D. Forsythe, was born in New Jersey, March 11, 1849; (3) Louisa, wife of L. R. Alder, a man of Iowa, was born in Washtenaw Co. Aug. 28, 1850; (4) Laura A., wife of O. G. Alderman, of Swan Lake, Dakota, was born April 26, 1852; (5) Ada L., wife of J. J. Saulsbury, of North Baltimore, Wood Co., Ohio; (6) Alice, born March 31, 1856; (7) Ida M., born May 23, 1860; (8) Willie F., born April 17, 1864. Source:  History of Washtenaw county, 1881, p. 422.

Allen Lovatus C. Later life

Mr. Allen was first elected as School Inspector, then as Justice of the Peace, and finally, in 1862, as Representative to the State Legislature, on the Union ticket. He served two sessions. He owns 200 acres. He has held various town offices. In the years 1863-64 he represented Augusta, York, Saline, Bridgewater, Manchester and Lodi, in the Legislature.  He is mourning the loss of his wife, who died Jan. 25, [1880?].  Mr. Allen's portrait is on page 529.  Source:  History of Washtenaw county, 1881, p. 422

The children of Lovatus C. Allen were recorded by Lorraine Butler, Kate’s grand-daughter. Lovatus was born in 1816.  (1) Kate (Catherine) was the oldest, born Feb. 20, 1848 in NJ, died May 2, 1922, age 74.  (2) Mary Allen (Forsythe) born March 11, 1849 in NJ, died Dec. 18, 1940 at age 91.  (3) Louise Allen (Alderman) born in 1850, died Feb. 23, 1938 at age 88. (4) Laura Allen (Alderman) born April 26, 1852 in York twp, died about 1935 at age 83. (5) Adelaide Allen (Salsburg or Salsbury) born Jan. 17, 1855 in York twp., died Sept. 18, 1926 at age 71. (6) Alice Allen b. March 3, 1856 in York twp. died in 1950 at age 94. (7) Ida May Allen b. May 23, 1860 in York twp, died 1945 age 85.  (8) William Fitch Allen b. April 17, 1864, died around 1945 age 81.  Fitch had a son, Grant Allen.

Allen Ralph

The body of Ralph Allen, accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Allen, arrived in Milan yesterday morning from Tucson, AZ.  The remains were taken to the home of Miss Alice and Miss Ida Allen, then to Marble Park and laid beside his brother Clayton whose sad death about 10 years ago makes this bereavement doubly hard for the family.  Service by Rev. Rosco Allen was b. Nov. 1854. He was 45 when the census came to his door. Occupation: farmer. Married 23 years. His wife, Lucy, was b. June 1855, she was 44 years old, married 23 years. Her parents were born in Ireland.  Two children living in the home: (1) Eloise M. Allen, daughter, b. June 1884, age 15; and Ralph E. Allen, son, b. Oct. 1889, age 10.  Note: Roscoe and Lucy had an older son, Clayton, see separate listing.

Allen Rosco,25, a farmer, b. in Mich., gave information to the 1880 census taker in Milan Township.  He said his father was b. in VT and mother b. in NY. He lived with his wife Lucy, 24. Her parents were both b. in Irelan. Also in the home: son Clayton L. Allen, age 1. There was also a boarder, Levi Moyer, a farm laborer.

Sarah Allen was born Dec. 22, 1821. She died Jan. 25, 1881. She was moved from Mooreville cemetery and re-buried at Marble Park cemetery Apr. 15, 1902.  Source: Mooreville cemetery.

Allen Seneca

Mr. Seneca Allen was a leader at the Monroe Masonic Lodge, serving as Worshipful Master. His son Harmon Allen was a member of the Milan Masonic lodge. Source: 1913 Monroe history book.  According to this book, Seneca Allen was a surveyor from 1827 until his death. He surveyed the City of Toledo in 1831, also the village of Trenton and Flat Rock. He was for some years clerk of the Territorial Council of Michigan. In 1826 he was elected Senior Grand Warden of the Grand Lodge (Masonic) and re-elected to the same office in 1827.

In 1918, Mrs. W. F. Allen was caring for her father, Joseph Gauntlett in her home.  He died at her home in Milan. 

Allen William

William Fitch Allen, known by his friends as “Fitch,” lived in the Allen family home west of Milan. He was b. in Milan April 17, 1864, son of L. C. Allen.  Fitch died around 1945. He was about 81.  Jack Butler remembers him as a neighbor, with a creamery in one of his barns. Those were the days before glass bottles, metal cans were used.

Albert L. Allison died in November 15, 1908. He was the son of H. N. Allison. Buried in London cemetery. Albert was born Sept. 17, 1876 in London twp on the farm he finally bought of his father and where he lived until he sold out recently to go west.  On Oct. 5 1908 he left Milan with his wife and two sons for Mitchell, South Dakota.  Typhoid fever soon developed.  He also left behind a brother, Warren.  In 1897 he married Ellen Hansor. Their boys are 5 and 9 years old now (in 1908).

Alice A. Allison died 3-6-1913.  Her maiden name was DeVree.  Her husband was H. Allison.  [Her husband was Horatio Allison.  It is possible her maiden name was DeVee.]

Allie Allison lived from 1859 to 1913.  She is buried in London Cemetery.  This may be a typo in the cemetery records, apparently she is “Alice.”

Alice said she was born in Mich. and her father was born in NY state, her mother was born in Scotland.  There was a son living in the household, Warren L. born March 1883, age 17, born in Michigan.  Her husband’s father, Horatio N. Allison Sr., was born in Jan. 1823, was 77 years old, born in NY, and his parents also born in NY. They had a nephew Jay living there, who was born in Feb. 1895, age 5.  The nephew was born in Oregon; his father was born in NY, and his mother was born in “unknown.”

Allison, son, white male, born Feb. 1883, age 17, single, works as farmer/laborer, born in Mich., both his parents born in Mich.  Child (2): Claud S., son, white, male, born June or January 1885, age 14, occupation farmer/laborer, born Mich, both parents born in Mich. Eva Allison was born approximately 1888.  Mother:  Frances McNeill Allison.  Father: Newell “Nick” Allison.  She may have been born in Milan.  The family moved to Detroit when she was a child.  The family was living in Charlotte, Michigan when she was 17, when her mother died.  According to the census in 1910, Eva was living with Mrs. A. E. Putnam (Eva’s aunt Alice).  In 1920, the census also says she was living with Mrs. Putnam.  Eva’s father died March 29, 1916 in Little Rock, Ark.

Mrs. Frances Allison, wife of Mr. N. F. Allison of Charlotte, Mich., died at her home on Sunday [Jan. 8, 1905].  She suffered for a year and a half from cancer which was the cause of death.  Frances Folsum McNeill was born at Petersburg, Monroe County, February 3, 1861, and was married to Mr. N. Allison, age 15, in 1860 census.  Not mentioned at all in 1870 census.  Did he die in the previous 10 years?  Note that his parents had a new baby in 1866 while living in Michigan, and named him “George.”

He was born Nov. 18, 1903, the son of Albert and Ellen Allison.  A truck driver for Dundee Freight Lines before he retired, hew as a member of the Teamsters Union and Moose lodge. Horatio N. Allison, Jr. farmer of London Township, was born in Murray, Orleans county, NY May 21, 1849. (From history of Monroe County 1913, page 26).  His parents came to Michigan, but owing to sickness of the family had to return to NY State.  In 1857 they returned to Michigan, located in London Township, and staying there until 1883 when they moved to Dakota.  Horatio worked on a farm in the summer and for three winters in the pine forests.  In 1875 he purchased 40 acres in London Twp.  On Dec. 26, 1875, he married Alice A. DeVee of London.  She was born Dec. 27, 1858 in Dundee.  Two children were born, Albert, Sept. 17, 1876 and Warren Lloyd, March 23, 1882.

Alice A. DeVee, the 8th child of Daniel and Mary DeVee, was born at Frenchtown, Monroe county, Dec. 27, 1859. In 1862 she and her parents moved to London twp. She was married to H. N. Allison Dec. 26, 1876 [NOTE discrepancy in date with marriage records.] and lived on their farm in London twp. until 11 years ago when they moved to Milan. Two sons were born, Albert and Warren L.  Albert preceeded her in death about 4 years ago.  She was visiting her son Warren in California but felt sick so she returned to Milan and died there.  She had two grandsons, Leon and Harold Allison of Milan.  She was buried at London cemetery.  Source: Monroe Eve. Allison “Sr.”  She was born in NY, about 1822 or 1823.  Their sons, with approximate year of birth, were as follows:  (1) George S., 1846; (2) Joshua, 1848; (3) Horatio N. or perhaps Horatio Nelson, “Jr.” 1849; (4) Jabez  W., 1850; (5) Adelbert, 1852; (6) Alfred, 1857; (7) Newell (probably “Nick”) 1859; (8) John, 1861 or 62; and (9) George, possibly also called “Jessie,” 1866 or 1867.  Newell and his older brothers were born in NY, the younger ones were born in London Township.  Apparently Marie died before 1900 because the census that year found her husband, Horatio, in London Township, but not her.

According to 1860 census, Newell Allison was 1 year old, living in Gaines, Orleans, NY with his parents and six older brothers.  His father was Horatio N. Allison, mother Antoinette Allison.   Later he went by the name “Nick” and “Nicholas.”

Ruebel & Co.  The Rev. W. M. Hunter officiated, assisted by the Rev. J. T. Rodgers.  Burial was at Oakland cemetery.  The services at the grave were in charge of Harmony Lodge, Brotherhood of American Carmen, of which Mr. Allison was a member. Source: obit.

Martha’s combined information:  He was born about 1867 since he died March 29, 1916 at age 49. (OR: he was born in 1859 based on census records, and his age was recorded wrong at the time of his death.)  His father was Horatio. His real name was Newell but he used the nickname Nick.  He married Frances McNeill, who was about 6 years older than him if he was born in 1867. Their wedding was April 10, 1885.   He would have been about 18 years old when he married.  He was photographed with some businessmen in Milan.  Then he and Frances went to live in Detroit, later moving to Charlotte, Michigan, where Frances died in 1905.  Frances and Nick had a daughter, Eva, who was 17 when her mother died.  (In 1910 and 1920, Eva lived with A. E. Putnam and family.)  Nick died at a hospital in Little Rock, Ark. on March 29, 1916 after removal of gall stones.  He was buried at Oakland cemetery, with grave service conducted by the Brotherhood of American Carmen.

Frances Folsum McNeill, called “Fanny,” was born Feb. 3, 1861 in Petersburg, MI. She was married April 10, 1885 to Nicholas Allison.  She died Jan. 8, 1905 in Charlotte, Michigan.  She had one daughter, (Eva).

Vera Mae Allison died Ap. 11, 1974 in Addison hospital. She was born March 29, 1889 in Deerfield.  In 1943 she married Millard Allison, and he died in 1961.

Edward Allshouse put up a general store in Cone, which was photographed in 1907. He and his wife were shown in the picture.

The Monroe Record-Commercial, dated Thursday April 6, 1916, says “Cone News-  Mrs. Allshouse, who died in Adrian recently, was a kind friend to many who attended her funeral last Friday. She was a resident of Cone for many years and was held in high esteem by all who knew her.”

Anderson Henry

Henry John Anderson was born July 29, 1889 and died Aug. 1, 1962.  He married Maude Downs on Jan. 11, 1912.  He is buried at Marble Park Cemetery.

Anderson Maude

Maude L. Downs was the wife of Henry John Anderson. Maude was born Dec. 31, 1887 and died April 9, 1974.  She was the daughter of Frank Howard Downs and Cynthia Jane Wagar.  Maude and her sister Mabel lived with or near their parents on a farm in Huron Township, Wayne County, until 1926 when they left the New Boston area due to an expressway. So they moved to Petersburg Road in Milan twp.  Maude was already married to Henry Anderson when they all moved to Milan.  She and Henry had six children, all but one of them lived in the Milan area.  Maude and her husband are both buried at Marble Park cemetery.

J. DeWitt Arner passed away Thursday after two weeks of pneumonia and stomach trouble.  The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the church.  Those present from out of town were A. E. Putnam, Milan; Wm. McNeil, Dundee; Arthur Snidecor, Ithaca; Fred and Arton Yokom, Ann Arbor; Mrs. Van Riper, Manchester; T. C. Harris and wife, G. W.Jackson and family, Ernie Coller and mother, all of Tecumseh.  "Card of Thanks" accompanied this news clipping, signed by "Mrs. John Arner and Family."

George Arnot, owner of a grocery store and builder of the Arnot Opera on Tolan Street, ran an ad in the Milan Leader Dec. 14, 1911:  “Please say in your paper that I will not waste money by decorating for the holidays and will give patrons of my store the benefit of the saving. George Arnot.”

Earl Wright Arnot of 55 Second St. died March 21 1945. Age 44. His DOB was Oct. 17, 1895.  Wife: Margaret Mitchell.  He was a manager of a bowling alley.  His father was George Arnot, born in Lexington Michigan. Mother was Jennie Davis. Cause of death: suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning.  Informant: Mrs. Margaret Arnot. Burial: Croswell, Michigan.

J. M. Auten built the Cone elevator in aboaut 1900. It was a small frame building on the then Wabash Railroad right-of-way. Capacity: 6,000 bushels of grain. Mr. Auten operated the elevator for a few years, then sold it to John Dennison who owned a farm about one mile from the elevator on Cone Road.

John Auten was b. Nov. 1850 and was 49 when the 1900 census was taken.  He had been married 25 years. Occupation: dealer in charload brah. (What’s that?) Owns his own home inside Village of Milan, on Monroe county side. He owns it free and clear, no mortgage. Wife is Elizabeth (see separate listing).  Source: 1900 census.

In 1931, Stanley Auten provided his home as a place for the funeral of his long-time friend James A. Cone.

M. Stanley Auten of Hubbard Lake died in his home there. Services at Stevens and Bush Funeral Home of Milan. He was a former Milan resident. He owned and operated Saco Grain Elevator in Milan. He moved to Hubbard Lake about 10 years ago.  Survived by daughter, Mrs. William Taylor of 205 Lafayette St.; a brother, Willard of 125 York St., and a sister, Mrs. Mertie Rainier of 625 Dexter St., Milan. Located in City of Ann Arbor in or near the Exchange Block in or near Brown and Fuller Addition, fronting on Broadway, with 28 feet 5 inches across frontage.  An alley in the back serves this property and the neighboring businesses.  Liber 86 p. 343.

William C. Ayers purchased land in Village of Milan Nov. 20, 1882. Sellers: Henry B. Bessac and wife Julia Y. Bessac.  Price: $6,000.  The land included parcels in both Monroe and Washtenaw counties.  Land touches Monroe and Saline Highway, total of 1 acre. Liber 96, page 639.

William Ayres, 55, b. NY, father b. England, Hotel Keeper.  Wife Annie Ayres, 52, b. NY. York twp census 1880, village of Milan.  [He was born about 1825, Annie about 1828.]

Aylesworth Daniel

Daniel Aylesworth, farmer, sec. 26, was born in New York, in 1805, a son of Daniel and Anna Aylesworth, natives of Rhode Island.  Mr. Aylesworth came to this county in 1835 when he was about 20. He was married in New York, in 1827, to Betsey Huntley, who was born in New York, in 1810. Their two children are both deceased.  Mrs. Aylesworth died in 1832. He married a second wife in 1833 Betsey Perkins, who was born in New York, in 1805. One child was born to them, Emeline, wife of A. D. Dinsmore. Betsey Aylesworth died in 1869. Mr. Aylesworth married his third wife in 1878, Mary A. Marvin, who was born in New York, in 1811. Mr. Aylesworth owns 40 acres of land, and is a consistent member of the Baptist Church.  Source: History of Washtenaw County, 1881, p. 1423.

Aylsworth Merta

Merta Aylsworth died in her home in Willis July 28, 1939 (the date is hard to read, might be 1938 or 1936).  She was 69 years, 18 days old.  Merta May Mead was born in Milan township July 10, 1870, the daughter of Chalan and Helen Mead.  She married Anthony D. Aylsworth on Jan. 23, 1907. She is survived by a brother, Warren Mead, and a sister, Zola P. Spencer, both of Milan.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel, and a half sister, Cora Matthews.  Source: Obit.
