FRIEND
Friend Henry |
Henry C. Friend was born 1842 in either New York or Pennsylvania. A newspaper article from the New York Times says NY, but the census taker in Milan counted his son, William Friend, and reported that William’s father was born in PA. The newspaper report stated that he was of French descent. NYT Jan. 6, 1889. |
Friend Henry |
Prof. Henry C. Friend died March 10, 1888 in New York City. He did not die in the Great Blizzard, which came a day or two later. Friend had been sick for six weeks before he died. Wm. Henry Hack was there in New York with him, at his side, when he died. |
Friend Henry |
Henry C. Friend, age 42, was on board “The Oregon” and arrived in New York on Dec. 21, 1885. (He was born about 1843.) The ship departed Liverpool, England. Other passengers on the arrival document: Olive, his wife, age 30; William E., his son, age 7 months, and Emily Howard, 48. |
Friend Henry |
Henry C. Friend was married Feb. 3, 1883 in Niles, Michigan, according to marriage records from Berrien County. He was 41 and a resident of Chicago. The bride, Mrs. Olive E. Van Ness, was 31, and a resident of Chicago. He was born in New York, occupation Chemist. Wedding was officiated by A. M. Gould, clergyman, and witnessed by Wm. E. Howard and Emily Howard both of Chicago. |
Friend Olive |
Olive E. Friend was born in Dec. 1852 according to the 1900 census, where she was living in Detroit with her husband George Halstead. If her husband was born in 1843, he was 9 years older. |
Friend Olive |
Olive Friend built a house on County Street. She was a niece of Mary Hack (Mary Hack was James Hack’s mother). House later known as “Hack House.” Olive Friend was the daughter of Jacob M. Vanness, a farm laborer, and Emily Burnham. See “Burnham.” |
Friend Olive |
In 1888, Olive Friend had an addition put on her house in Milan. She put on the addition soon after her husband died, in the opinion of R.M. There is an art book published in about 1893 that shows her house, and the addition was on the house at that time. |
Friend Olive |
Olive Friend was born Olive Van Ness. She married Oliver Tibado Sept. 26, 1867 in Washtenaw County, MI. Olive was the daughter of Emily Burnham and Jacob Van Ness. Olive later married her second husband, Prof. Henry Friend. |

Friend Olive |
Olive and Oliver must have divorced by 1879 because the 1880 census shows Oliver Tibado living with his new wife Cora and a child 8 months old. By 1884, Olive and her new husband Henry Friend moved to NY so that Henry could find investors in his “chemical sugar process.” Around this time, Olive’s mother and step-dad, Emily and William E. Howard, also moved to NY. Presumably Olive and Henry Friend were married between 1882-1883 or thereabouts. |

Friend Olive |
Olive Friend worked at one time in the sugar factory of the New York Electric Sugar Company. She secretly bought the bags of refined sugar. Her husband Henry Friend advertised that he processed the sugar to make it even more pure, so it seemed like it was a real accomplishment for the electric appliance they were supposedly going to sell. For the sake of appearances to investors, they purchased an 8-story building by the river in NY. They took raw sugar and dumped it down the drain, replacing it in the appliance with refined sugar. |
Friend Olive |
The Electric Sugar Company hired some of Olive Friend’s relatives from Milan to work for the company. Her uncle Lyman Burnham came to use his carpenter skills. Lyman’s son-in-law Oren Augustus “Gus” Halstead and Gus’s brother George Alstead also came to NY to do the manual labor. Source: R.M. |

William E. Howard quickly raised the money for his bail, and was freed, but his wife Emily and step-daughter Olive were left to rot behind bars for over a year. |
Friend Olive |
According to the 1894 census of York Township, Olive E. Friend was living in what we now call the “Hack House.” Olive was 40 years old, female, white, occupation Housewife, and a widow. She had one child born and one child still living. She was b. in Ohio, and her father (Van Ness) was b. in NJ. Her mother (Emily Burnham) was b. in NY. In the next house, just west of “Hack House,” was Olive’s mother, Emily Howard, age 62, housewife, married. She had 3 children born, 2 still living. She was born in NY, her father b. in NH, and her mother b. in Maine. Emily was living alone because her husband William E. Howard was still in Sing-Sing prison in NY.

Fuller Daraxa |
Daraxa, only daughter of John McLouth(II) and Sarah Peirce, was born Sept. 21, 1789 at Cheshire, Massachusetts. Daraxa was a young child when her family removed to the vicinity of Manchester, New York, and settled in the wilderness. She married Levi Fuller, a native of Duchess County, New York, who had come to Ontario County as a boy. For some years they armed in Manchester and Galen townships, where all 14 of their children were born. Later they removed to Michigan, being among the early pioneers in the Township of York, Washtenaw County, near the present village of Milan. She sange with a loud and penetrating musical voice, which her children admired, and some of her descendants seem to have inherited her talent. She was very religious. She belonged to the Baptist Church of Clyde, New York, and helped organize the First Baptist Church of York. She died June 26, 1857 after a painful disease that caused swelling of her shoulders and arms. She was buried in York Cemetery.
