Archie Gauntlett was born 4-24-1867 and died 11-07-1924.  Marble Park Cemetery records. [NOTE: This birth date is a mistake, he was married in 1875, and he would have been 8 years old. I think he was born 4-24-1857, making him 18 when he first married.  See obit which agrees with my date.]

Gauntlett Archibald

Archibald Gauntlett was married to Sarah Pool in 1907.  The two lived on W. Main in Milan, where the movie theater was later built.  They had a boarding house, and she attracted up to 100 people for chicken dinner on a Sunday.

Gauntlett Archie

On June 1, 1894, Archie M. Gauntlett and his wife Emma, of the Village of Milan, sold a parcel of property to Wolverine Lodge I.O.O.F. number 197.  This is apparently where the Odd Fellows erected their building on south side of W. Main Street.

Gauntlett, Archie M.

Archie M. Gauntlett, youngest son of James and Annis Gauntlett [NOTE: Probably Annis Hubbard Gauntlett, James’ second wife], was born April 24, 1857 and departed this life Nov. 7 [1924], aged 67 years, 6 months and 13 days.  He moved with his parents from the Gauntlett homestead, across from Marble Park cemetery, when seven years of age and spent the remainder of his life, with the exception of a short time, in the residence where his demise took place [NOTE: Probably on W. Gauntlett Charles

“Charlie Gauntlett owned a race track and ball diamond west of the Ann Arbor Railroad tracks and north of Main Street, which was a center of activity for the sporting crowd.”   From a history of York Township, written in 1976.

Gauntlett Charles

On March 25 1933 Charles Gauntlett died at the home of Mrs. Wila Lampkin.  Charles had a daughter, “Mrs. Kilman.” Charles was born Aug. 7, 1858*, youngest child of James and Mary Wilkins Gauntlett, on the homestead just a few hundred feet from the grave site where he was laid to rest.  The family came to Michigan just 6 years before Charles was born. (From obituary.) At the age of 10, Charles went to Mooreville to live with his oldest sibling, his brother James.  He also did farm work for his older sister Harriett (Mrs. Albert Holcomb). At age 18, Charles was apprenticed to his brother James to learn shoemaking trade.  At the end of 3 years, according to the agreement, the brother James gave Charles a set of tools and $150.  Charles went into business for himself on the corner on which the Gauntlett block now occupies.  He purchased the store then standing there and by the time he was 30, owned the present block.  On Aug. 28, 1876 he married Jennie Bunce of London Twp.  They had two children, a boy who died at birth and one daughter.  Except for two years spent in the employ of the Krans Shoe Company in A2, Charles Gauntlett had a shoe store on this corner until 1892 when he sold out to the Stimpson brothers to devote his entire time to the raising and training of horses.  [NOTE: year of birth may be wrong, should be 1853.]

Gauntlett Charles

B. Aug. 7, 1853 on a farm in York Township about a mile NW of village of Milan.  His father was James Gauntlett of London, England; mother was Mary Wilkins of London, Eng. [from Past and Present of Wash County 1906].  Charles was one of a large family.  He went to the district schools and the Union school of York township.  During vacation he did farm work.  At age 21 (1874?) he entered mercantile life on his own account with little capital and much credit.  He started a boot and shoe store in Milan, which he kept going for 18 years, [until 1892?] with the exception of 2 years in Ann Arbor in the employ of Henry Krause and one year in Detroit where he founded Queen Quality store.  On selling out there he returned to Milan, his family having remained there during his absence.  Charles loved fine horses.  He had a stable of high quality horses.  One named Hazel Ridge won first price at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.  He had fine trotting stock. Later in life he withdrew from the turf, selling his stable, his last trotter being sold in the summer of 1905.

Gauntlett Charles

“Gauntlett and Gauntlett” dry good store was photographed in approximately 1915 on Main Street, according to Way Back When column Nov. 28, 1979.  There was a Silk Barbershop to the left, and “Ch..” to the right.  Note: The “Ch…” may be Charles Steidle Shoe Store on the NW corner of Main and Tolan.  The Gauntlett store was either in the west half of that building, or it was immediately to the west of that building.  I assume Charles was one of the two Guantlett owners.

Gauntlett Charles W.

Charles W. Gauntlett was born Aug. 7, 1853 in York Township on a farm.  Married Emma Jane “Jenny” Bunce in Aug. 1876. Died March 25, 1933 in Milan. Burial at Marble Park Cemetery. Occupation: Merchant.  In his later years, he lived in Philadelphia, PA and Buffalo, NY. Source: M. Rooks.

Gauntlett Charles

When Hazel Ridge 2:11 1/4, the fast and game son of Sphinx dropped dead at Cleaveland last week Wednesday, not only his owner, Charles Gauntlett, of Milan, but the whole breeding interest of Michigan suffered a serious loss. Hazel was easily the best trotter by Sphinx that has yet appeared, and, had he lived, his chances for a place in the 2:10 list were rosy. He was also an elegantly-bred horse, his dam, Home Maid, having also produced Cora Barlum 2:23 1/2, and the pacer, Cantab 2:14 3/4. Individually Hazel Ridge was a very handsome horse and had been a blue ribbon winner at the horse shows. He was eight years old. Hazel Ridge 2:11 1/4 was buried in the Cleveland infield, beside several other famous horses.  -Horse Review.  Source: Local Milan paper plageurizing another publication.

On November 15, 1878, John Bunce and Charles Gauntlett purchased certain lots in Ann Arbor along Huron Street.  They paid $1800.  It says Bunce lived in Monroe County, and it says Gauntlett lived in Ann Arbor.  Liber 93 page 6. This makes me wonder if Gauntlett was having marital problems back home.

Gauntlett Richard

Richard Gauntlett, former resident of Milan passed away in Detroit last Saturday (July 19 1930 is written date on news slip). He moved from Milan many years ago but has been a frequent visitor here [in Milan] at the home of his son, Fred Gauntlett. Funeral services were held in Detroit Monday and burial at Woodmere cemetery in Detroit. Born in 1843, in London, England, he came in 1847 with his parents to Milan [NOTE: to rural Mooreville], then a favorite spot for early English settlers. When he was 17, he enlisted at Tecumseh, Mich. with the Michigan Fourth infantry, under the command of Captain D. D. Marshall.  During the war he participated in numerous engagements including the battle at Gettysburg. During that engagement he was wounded in the leg and hip.  Mr. Gauntlett is survived by two sons, Fred of Milan, and George, of Chicago; two daughters, Mrs. Charles Simon and Mrs. Howard Lawrence both of Detroit, and a brother, Charles Gauntlett.

Gauntlett Richard

Richard Gauntlett was married at some point to a lady named Catherine or perhaps Mary Catherine.  According to the obit of Fred Gauntlett, he was the son of Richard and Catherine Gauntlett.  Richard had three other children, too, because Fred’s obit states that he is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Charles A. Simons and Mrs. Howard Lawrence of Grosse Pointe Park, and one brother, George of Chicago.  Because Richard’s obit makes no mention of any wives, I have to assume he and Catherine were divorced, and maybe Richard and Alice were divorced too, who knows?
