Jackson Alice

In 1906, Alice Gauntlett had her name mentioned in a biography of Andrew D. Jackson.  It says Alice was the sister of Andrew.  Alice’s parents were Charles and Clarisse Owen Jackson.  Alice married Richard Gauntlett and they lived in Detroit.  Her date of death is not given but she was deceased in 1906 when this bio was written.

Jackson Andrew

Andrew D. Jackson was born in Seneca township, Ontario county, NY July 15, 1841. He died Feb. 8, 1912, aged 70 years, 6 months and 23 days.  He came to Michigan with his parents at age 12.  They went to a farm in York township (later owned by Adelbert Richards).  He was baptized in Wheeler Creek and joined York Baptist Church April 7.  Soon after he moved to Chesaning, Mich for about five years and returned to York township. He was superintendent of Sunday School there, and later at Milan Baptist Church. On Aug. 30, 1862, he was 21, and joined Co. G. Sixth Mich. Cavalry. He fought in Gettysburg and other battles, etc., then on Sept. 16, 1863 he was captured and taken to Libby prison. Later that month he was paroled and exchanged.  Etc.  He stayed in the military after Lee’s surrender April 9 1865. Then he fought the Indians out west, etc.   Nov. 18, 1869 he married Frances Anne Richards.  They had a son, Frank. The deceased alternated between living on his farm, and living in Milan (village?).  His wife died about 1906.  He had two sisters, Mrs. Oscar Stimpson of Saline and Mrs. James McMullen of Milan; two brothers, John of Milan and Charles of Virginia, Minn.  Source:  obituary.

Andrew Jackson is at York cemetery. He was b. July 15, 1841, and died Feb. 1912. He faught in Co. G. 6th Mich 5th ? Cav.  His wife, Frances Richards Jackson, is also at York cemetery. She was born Nov. 11, 1842 and died April 12, 1904.  See Francis Jackson.

Jackson Andrew D.

Andrew D. Jackson was born in Seneca, Ontario county, New York on July 14, 1841.  His parents were Charles and Clarisse (Owen) Jackson.   [See “Charles Jackson” below.]
He attended public schools until age 18, then worked as a farmer. In 1884 he got a job as a carpenter and joiner. He worked in the building trades until 1900, then returned to farming.  He took time out to enlist August 30, 1862, joining Co. G, 6th Mich. Cavalry. He fought at Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Winchester and Cedar Creek. He was a corporal when he was discharged Dec. 5, 1865.
He married Frances A. Richards Nov. 18, 1869. Her parents, William and Elizabeth Richards of York Twp, were both born in England. Andrew and Frances adopted a son, Frank D.  On April 12, 1904, Francis died after being ill two years.  She was buried in York cemetery with her parents and other relatives.
Andrew was a Republican and belonged to the Baptist church.  He is an active member of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic). He was a justice of the peace for one term, clerk of York Township for three terms, assessor for one term, councilman of the Village of Milan for three terms, and Milan village president for one term. Jackson Andrew

Andrew D. Jackson was born in Ontario county, NY, July 16, 1841.  (history of Monroe County, page 37).  He enlisted, and was discharged December 1865. (Military details were included.)  On November 18, 1868, he married Frances A. Richards, of York (township) and they have no children of their own, so they adopted a son.  Moved to Milan village in 1884.  He has been a town clerk of York township.  Is an assessor of Milan.  He served as a justice of the peace at York.

Jackson Andrew D.

Andrew D. Jackson had the middle name “Decatur” but he just used the initial D.  He was a farmer, carpenter, and justice of the peace at various times. He was born in the Finger Lakes area of New York state and came to Michigan as a teenager with his parents and a brother.  He was born in 1842. He enlisted at age 20, one year after Civil War started. Jackson Andrew Mrs.

Mrs. Andrew Jackson died Tuesday, April 12, 1904 at the residence on First Street. She had ben ill for two years.  She was formerly Miss Frances Ann Richards, daughter of William and Elizabeth Richards. She was b. in York township Nov. 11, 1842.  She married Andrew Jackson Nov. 18, 1869. They lived on a farm in York township, then moved into Milan in 1884. She was survived by her husband, a son, Frank, brother Thomas Richards of Ypsi, brother George F. Richards, sisters Mrs. E. R. Fuller and Mrs. John W. Blakeslee. She beonged to the Baptist church. Rev. T. D. Denman, Baptist pastor, presided at funeral. She was Buried at York cemetery.  Source: news clipping.

Jackson Charles

Charles Jackson came to York township in 1853 from Seneca, Ontario county, NY. He was a farmer. He bought 80 acres.  He died in the 1860’s.  His wife, Clarisse (Owen) Jackson, was a Connecticut native.  She died Jan. 27, 1879. Their sons were: William J.; Andrew D.; John A., a mechanic of Milan; and Charles M., who is living in Virginia, Minnesota [in 1906]. The daughters are: Mary J. Stimpson, wife of Oscar Stimpson of Saline; Arabelle, wife of James McMillan; Alice, the deceased wife of Richard Gauntlett, of Detroit; Mrs. Sylvia C. Blackmer, of Saline, now deceased; Harriet A., the deceased wife of George Nason, of Saginaw, Michigan; Annie, the deceased wife of Spencer R. Rogers, of Pittsfield, Michigan; Eliza J., the deceased wife of James LeBarron of York Township; and Isabelle, now deceased.  Source: Washtenaw County Past and Present, 1906, bio of Andrew Jackson.

Anna L. Jacobs was born in Milan, Mich., on April 2, 1873, daughter of Hiram and Eliza Jacobs.  Married April 15, 1898.  Jacobs family Bible.

Jacobs Anna

Anna Jacobs, daughter of Hiram and Sophia Jacobs, was b. April 1873 in Mich.  She was 27 when the census was taken in 1900. Occupation: teaching.  She lived with her parents, Hiram and Sophia, and her twin sons, Glen Finch and Glyde Finch. Both the boys were b. in July 1889 and were 1 years old at the time of the census. I am guessing that Anna was divorced from a guy named Mr. Finch.

Jacobs Hattie

Hattie Jacobs, daughter of Hiram and Sophia Jacobs, was b. March 1870 in Mich. She was 30 and living with her parents, sister, brother, and two nephews when census was taken in 1900. Their home was in Village of Milan on Monroe county side. Hattie’s occupation: teaching.

Jacobs Harvey

Harvey Jacobs was born in Monroe County Sept. 13, 1837, and died at his home in York (twp) March 3, 1903, aged 65 years, 5 months, 20 days.  He married Maria Childs of Milan April 26, 1863. They had 7 children. His son Albert F. of Nebraska survives, along with George, Frank, Grace, and Mrs.Samuel Young of York (twp).   [Apparently two other children died and so they are not mentioned.]  He was a veteran of the Civil War. Hiram Jacobs was born March 19, 1834 in “Rasenville” MI. Date of marriage: May 26, 1859.  Died: March 9 or 19, 1906 or 1900 (hard to read).  Family bible, Jacobs.

Hiram Jacobs and his wife Sophia had a daughter, Lulu Jacobs.  Lulu (or Lula) had a second husband, Conrad S. Tinsman.  For more information about Lulu, see “Tinsman, Conrad.”  Note:  the Jacobs Family Bible says Hiram married Eliza S. Childs.  Perhaps Hiram was married more than once?  Note: Conrad’s real name was “Conard.”

Jacobs Hiram

Hiram Jacobs of Milan was born at Raisinville March 19, 1835.  He left home at 16 to enter the blacksmith trade. He married Eliza Childs of Milan. They had 8 children, of whom five are now living (in 1890).  Mr. Jacobs enlisted in Co. I, 15th Mich. Inf. As a private. On April 6, 1862, he was wounded and discharged in July due to injuries. He lived on a farm of 40 acres until 1882, when he sold it and came to Milan (village). He is a member of Taylor Post, No. 274, G. A. R. of Milan.

Hiram Jacobs was b. in Mich. in March 1834.  He was 66 and married 41 years when the census was taken in 1900. He and wife Sophia were living in Village of Milan on Monroe county side.  His occupation: “invalid.”  He owns his home free and clear. His father b. in Massachusetts; he doesn’t know where his mother was born.  Others living in home besides Hiram and Sophia: children Hattie, Anna, and Irving, and two twin grandsons-- Glenn and Glyde.  See separate listings.

Mrs. Lulu Tinsman, 87, of 41 Dexter St., died at 6 p.m. yesterday [Oct. 13, 1952 is date on newspaper clipping] in the Beach Convalescent Home at Dundee.  Friends may call at the Stevens and Bush funeral home where services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Marble Park Cemetery. The daughter of Hiram and Sophia Jacobs, she was born April 15, 1865 at Milan. Her marriage to Charles Ridley was June 13, 1885, and they lived on a farm near Milan. He died Jan. 20, 1919. Two children, Mabel and Elmer Ridley, also preceded her in death. She was married Jan. 14, 1925, to Conrad S. Tinsman at Milan and they lived in the home on Dexter St. He died March 4, 1950.  Source: Monroe Evening News

Sophia Jacobs, wife of Hiram, was b. March 1837 in Mich. She was 63, living in Village of Milan with her husand and kids when 1900 census was taken.  See “Hiram.” Both her parents were b. in NY. She had a total of 3 children, all 3 are still living.

Theodore Jacobs was b. July 1827 in Mich. He was 72 when he answered the 1900 census. He’d been married 50 years. Occupation: Farmer. Wife: Hannah Jacobs, age 69, b. Aug. 1830 in NY. Two ch ildren living in the home:  (1) David, son, b. Oct. 1853, age 46; (2) Belle, daughter.  There was a servant living with the family, Effie Reeves, born in Ireland. Ben Johnson was at a Firemen’s Christmas party in 1951 along with his wife Vivian.

L. B. Johnson purchased the Milan Leader in 1913 from Frank Gates.  He ran the paper until he died, then his wife Etta took it over.  In 1938 Etta died and their daughter Lucille Johnson DeRyke took over.

Eleanor Johnson lived in Milan Township on the edge of Milan. Her maiden name was  Lobbestael.  Her home had historical significance.  Her husband, Paul, was an electrician.  Eleanor and Paul had a daughter.  Eleanor died in 2006.  See also “Walter Johnson.”

The 1870 census says Albert Johnston, 18, was in Wayne County, in Detroit, working as a streetcar driver. He was living in a hotel in Detroit. Source: Ron Morey. Note: probably not related to the Johnston family of Milan Township and Village of Milan.

Photo [#3017] shows two men in Civil War uniforms with a US flag between them. They are in a photo studio. “W. J. Sissem, Milan, Mich.” is stamped on the front in big thick letters.  Back of photo has handwritten note:  “Allen Johnston, left, Pete’s father.”  Apparently this photo was donated by Eva Clark, probably through Warren Hale.  Note: it is more likely that Allen is Pete’s son, not Pete’s father.   Note: the two men in the photo are wearing m/1885 uniforms with the campaign hat used during the Span/Am war. Source: Ken B.

An ad in the Dec. 14, 1911 Milan Leader stated:  “Paroid Roofing Satisfies the most particular builder. We sell it. We also sell cheaper roofing.  P. T. Johnston & Sons.”  Note: Charles Bird of Mass. was marketing a roofing material made of tar and recycled rope, which he called Neponset Paroid Roofing.  His business was near the Neponset River.

P. T. Johnston was seriously ill when his daughter, Ada, was married to Norman Eighme.  See “Eighme” for more info.  Eighme is pronounced “Amy.”

“The Garage” became a Henry Ford coil factory. Before that it was an auto repair garage owned by Pete Johnston. He built it in 1923 in conjunction with his coal and lumber business, on the same property. Source: WBW Feb. 24, 1988.

Johnston Pete

Peter T. Johnston died Monday night. He was the senior member of a lumber company, and was a director of the Milan State Savings Bank. He was 83 years old. He lived in the Milan area all his life.  He lived on a farm west of Milan until he was about 22, when he moved to the Village of Milan and established a lumber business with his two sons. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

I knew Pete Johnston.  The building on East side of old 23, which became a Ford Factory, before Ford bought it, that was a lumber yard.  It was owned by Ruby and Alley or Ally Johnston.  Pete was the son of one of them.  It was Pete’s father and/or uncle ran the lumber yard.  Source: Bill Squires.  Note: Ruby would be Rubin Johnston.

On the SW corner of Wabash and Division, there is a gas station and or garage, right up tight to a house.  Pete Johnston built that gas station and garage, probably in the 30’s. It’s attached to that house.  Source:  Bill Squires.  

Johnston Ruben H.

1910 census, Milan township, shows Ruben H. Johnston as head of household. He is 36, b Mich., merchant in lumber and coal. Susie A., 28, b Illinois.  The family lives on River Street.  Source: Ron Morey.

Johnston Reuben H.

Rueben H. Johnston, 71, died early Saturday at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born to Peter T. and Celora Johnston on Jan. 20, 1874. The family moved from a farm near Milan twp. to Milan village in 1908, where Ruben became associated with his father and brother in the lumber business. He married Suzie A. McKee of Chicago on Jan. 26, 1909. They lived in Milan. He was a member of the Milan Fire Dept. for 36 years and worked for the Village for the past 8 years. Survived by his wife, daughter Mabel Katherine Miller, son Henry H., sisters Mrs. Fred Lewis and Mrs. Norman Eighme. His brother, Allen Johnston died previously.  Marble Park cemetery. Johnston William

William Johnston died Nov. 2, 1878, age 64 years, according to gravestone at St. Mary’s cemetery, Milan township, Section 17.  His wife Bridget died Oct. 26, 1869, age 42; she was the daughter of William and Ann Curry.  Also buried in St. Mary’s cemetery: son William, died Sept. 17, 1871, age 21; daughter Mary, died July 23, 1872; daughter Ellen, died Aug. 31, 1870, age 17 years.

Glenn Jones came from Detroit Sunday night to spend Christmas with his parents, Adelbert Jones and wife.  Milan Leader, Dec. 28, 1911.

Grant Jones was in the Insurance business, and lived at 207 W. Main, according to a Rotary club membership roster dated Jan. 4, 1949.

Genevieve Elizabeth Jordan graduated from Milan High School in 1945.

Juckett

W. S. Juckett owned a grocery and dry goods store on E. Main in about 1900.  He was next to the Sill hardware and 2 doors down from Minto.   He was part of a 3 shop storefront.

Juckett Floyd

Floyd Juckett of Tecumseh arranged to bury his sister, Mrs. Gladys Ruddimaker, at Marble Park Cemetery. Her funeral was held at his home. She was 29 years old. Their mother, Mrs. Scott Juckett, lives in Detroit.  Floyd Juckett at one time owned what is now the Star Grocery Store.  Source: Genealogist Friend Vol. 2 page 20.

Judd Ephraim

Pioneers began settling in what is now York township in 1824. Among them were Ephraim Judd. Source: A Third Volume Devoted to Washtenaw County, Byron Alfred Finney, 1924.
