Harriet Palmer of London twp was born in Oneida county, N. Y., Sept. 9, 1828. In 1835 her parents came to Michigan. Mrs. Palmer married A. F. Palmer, of London, Sept. 22, 1850. He enlisted in Co. I, 11th Mich. Vol. Inf. as private Aug. 24, 1861; was promoted to 1st sergt. of the company April 1, 1862; he took charge of the company, the commissioned officers having been captured, and while performing this duty was killed at the battle of Stone River, Jan. 2, 1863. Since last August Mrs. Lucy Clark had been suffering from rheumatism and other ailments and she was at the hospital in Ypsilanti. She returned home and almost immediately was taken with typhoid fever. She died Dec. 29, 1920. Mrs. Lucy Clark was born in Williamston, Mich., on March 31, 1852. She was the youngest daughter of Dr. Henry Palmer and Mrs. Lucy Palmer. At the age of five year she moved with her parents to Holly, Mich., where they resided for nine years. In 1866 the family moved to Milan, which place has been their home ever since. In Sept., 1873 she married George Clark. She adopted three daughters, and proved a kind and loving mother, ever desiring the best in life for her girls. Miss Eva Palmer died March 30,1908. Miss Dorothy remains to be a comfort and stay to the bereaved sisters, Miss Nettie and Maggie Palmer. |

In 1858 she married Marquis Palmer of London township. He was born in Genesee county, NY in 1826, died 1877. By this marriage four children were born to them, John, Perry, Orlanda, and Cora. Charles E. Patterson, 72, a grocer in Milan for 44 years, died at his home Nov. 11, 1938. He was a member of the Milan school board many years, a trustee of the Baptist Church and active in other civic affairs. He came to Milan about 48 years ago. His wife, Gertrude and one daughter, Mrs. Maurine Sutenfield of Chicago survive. |

Charles Edward Patterson died suddenly Thursday afternoon, from a heart condition. He was b. in Camden, Indiana, Nov. 21, 1866 and died Nov. 10, 1938 at age 71. The son of Rev. A. M. and Caroline Patterson, he was one of six children. As a young adult, he came to Milan and worked for the Wabash railroad and later with A. E. Putnam in his dry goods store. About 50 years ago he became associated with the Whitmarsh Grocery store of which he eventually became the sole owner. He joined the Baptist Church 48 years ago and held office of deacon and trustee most of that time. He was also Sunday school superintendent for many years. At one time he served on the Village Council and for many years on the Board of Education. He was married in 1889 to Gertrude C. Hitchcock who survives, along with daughter Mrs. George W. Suttenfield. Stevens and Bush funeral home. Burial in Ypsilanti. |

Hitchcock before her marriage and was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Elizabeth Dexter Hitchcock. She was born April 11, 1868, in York twp. and was married To Mr. Patterson in Milan May 23, 1889. Mr. Patterson was a merchant in Milan for many years, and died Nov. 10, 1938. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. George Suttenfield of Milan, and a half-brother, Arlie Hitchcock of Ann Arbor. Burial at Highland cemetery in Ypsilanti. |

Millard Jr. and Maurine had one child and lived at 258 Ideal St. in Milan. Millard Jr. developed some land that had been owned by his mother, Clara Wilcox, and was the original homestead of Lewis A. She was married a second time in 1903 to Lyman Burnham who passed away seventeen years ago. The later days of Mrs. Burnham’s life were spent in Washtenaw and Monroe counties. Daniel Preston, b in Oneida county, N. Y., June 21, 1827, is an active farmer of London twp. In 1855 he moved to a 40-acre farm in Mich. In 1869 he sold that farm and came to London twp. In 1852 he married Clarissa Allen, of New York State. Four children were born to them. Mrs. Preston died at Milan at age 27. In March, 1868, he married Helen Barnes, of Londontwp. Two children were born to them. She died in the spring of 1873. Mr. Preston married wife #3, Mrs. Francis Wollcott Miller, of Raisinville, Feb. 14, 1881, who was born May 9, 1850. Leonard A. Purdy was born July 10, 1925 in Hart, MI. His wife, Elinor J. (Osborn) Purdy was born August 6, 1928 in St. Johns, MI. They married Sept. 14, 1947. They had one son, David, Nov. 7, 1950. Leonard was a pharmacist. Leonard bought a drug store in Milan in 1952 from Don Conklin. Eventually they retired from the Milan drug store and opened a sewing shop in Toledo, Colubus and Reynoldsburg, Ohio, in 1971. He did not sell the Milan drug store, he simply walked away. Alfred E. Putnam and his wife Alice was living in Sigourney, Iowa in 1912. They received a post card that year from their close friends A. B. Smith and his wife Elmina McNeill, who were in California. The Smiths referred to themselves as “Al” and “Mina.” Alfred and Alice Putnam had four sons: (1) Harold McNeill Putnam b. Sept. 7, 1889; (2) Nathan Clyde Putnam b. Nov. 18, 1893; (3) John Alfred Putnam, b. May 1, 1901; and (4) Paul Albert Putnam, b. June 16, 1908. |

Alfred Emory Putnam, son of Nathan and Hannah Putnam, was born April 26, 1866 in Milan, Monroe County. Married Dec. 30, 1888 to Alice Stannard McNeill. (Some people think her name was Standard but it was really Stannard.) He was co-founder of the Milan Leader newspaper, and operated a department store on Wabash Street in Milan. He invented a device that would measure bolts of cloth without unwinding all the material. A. E. Putnam died Nov.10, 1941 in Washington, Wash. County, Iowa. |

Emmitt F. Pyle, M.D., was born Dec. 20, 1846, in Pekin, NY. He attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary, at Lima, NY, and Hobart College, at Geneva, NY. He entered the hospital of the Sisters of Charity as steward. He remained there two years. In 1866 he graduated from the Buffalo Medical University. He began practice of medicine at Pekin, NY. He married Etta Menzie of Niagra Falls, NY in 1875. One child was born to them. In 1882 he and his wife came to Milan. He was instrumental in the incorporation of Milan as a village. He was a director of the village union school. He was a trustee of the village and now serves as president. He is a 32nd degree Mason. (History of Monroe County, 1890). |

Emmet F. Pyle, M.D. came to Milan in 1882 with his wife when he was 36 years old. Way Back When of April 21, 1993. He had a two-family brick home on NE corner of Main and Ferman; one side was his medical office, other side was his home. He helped incorporate Milan into a home-rule village. He was elected to the first Village Board of Trustees. He was elected president in 1887. Later he served as a director of the Village Union School. Sometime prior to 1890, he built a new home at 52 E. Main. Office was on the west side of the building. |
